In a tragic turn of events, the Henderson community is mourning the loss of 11-year-old Brandon Dominguez-Chavarria, who was fatally shot during a road rage incident on the 215 Beltway.
The incident occurred on Friday morning as Brandon was being driven to school by his stepfather.
According to Henderson Police Chief Reggie Rader, two vehicles, a sedan and an SUV, were "jockeying for position" while merging onto the 215 from US 95/I-11.
The drivers engaged in a heated exchange, during which the driver of the sedan, identified as 22-year-old Tyler Matthew Johns, allegedly fired a single shot into the SUV, striking Brandon, who was seated in the back.
Following the shooting, Brandon's stepfather reportedly rammed the sedan, bringing both vehicles to a halt on the freeway.
A passing Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officer intervened, taking Johns into custody at the scene.
Despite the efforts of first responders and medical staff at University Medical Center, Brandon succumbed to his injuries.
Brandon's family has described him as "the light of our family" and "a happy, loving boy with the biggest heart, the silliest personality, and a joy that filled every room he entered."
In response to this senseless act, Chief Rader urged the community to exercise patience on the roadways, emphasizing the importance of valuing life over momentary frustrations.
Johns has been charged with open murder with a deadly weapon and discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle.
He is currently being held without bail, with his next court appearance scheduled for Tuesday.
The community continues to rally aroundBrandon's family, offering support Here and condolences during this difficult time. |
