Recent coyote activity in Summerlin raises community concerns |
A recent coyote sighting near Vassiliadis Elementary School in Summerlin led to a brief campus hold, highlighting growing concerns about wildlife encounters in the area.
On Monday, Principal Paul Catania informed families that the school was placed on "hold status" following reports of a coyote nearby. Clark County School District Police and animal control officers were promptly notified. The current status of the coyote remains unclear.
Vassiliadis Elementary is situated near Alta and Desert Foothills drives, west of the 215 Beltway. This incident is part of a broader trend of increased coyote activity in the Las Vegas Valley. Residents have reported more frequent encounters, with some neighborhoods experiencing coyotes roaming streets and yards, raising concerns about pet safety.
According to the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW), urban development and prolonged drought conditions have disrupted natural habitats, leading coyotes to venture into residential areas in search of food. NDOW advises residents to take precautions, such as not feeding wildlife, securing garbage, and supervising pets, especially during dawn and dusk when coyotes are most active.
While coyote attacks on humans are rare, it's essential for the community to remain vigilant and informed. Residents are encouraged to report aggressive coyote behavior to NDOW and to educate themselves on coexisting safely with local wildlife. |
